SAINT OF THE WEEK – Saint Birinus was sent to Britain by Pope Honorius in about 630AD to spread the Gospel further north than ever before.  He planned to move to the Midlands and reached as far as Dorchester near Oxford.  He wandered around the South Midlands successfully teaching and preaching.  Birinus built many churches but after only fifteen years he died.  A shrine for pilgrimage was built.  His shrine was moved several times between Winchester and Dorchester.  It is believed that he still lies in Dorchester to where the Church of England holds an annual pilgrimage. The feast of Saint Birinus is celebrated on December 5th.
