SAINTS OF THE WEEK – Saints Cornelius and Cyprian. Saint Cornelius was elected Pope in 251 and he defended the faith against the Novation heretics and, helped by Saint Cyprian, confirmed his authority.  In 253 Cornelius was exiled by Emperor Gallus and died of the hardships he endured in exile.  He is venerated as a martyr. Saint Cyprian of Carthage was born to wealthy pagans around the year 190.  He converted at the age of 56, was ordained priest a year later and made a Bishop two years after that.  He is second in importance only to great Saint Augustine as a figure and Father of the African Church. He was a close friend of Pope Cornelius and a staunch defender of the faith and ecclesiastical discipline.  He suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Valerian.  The names of Cornelius and Cyprian are included in the Roman Canon. Their feast day is celebrated on September 16th.
